Backline Consulting is a performance improvement consultancy, set up by management consultant and sport psychologist, Simon Houghton. After working as a consultant for organisations such as ConocoPhillips, MoD, Reuters, Vodafone, Shell and Santos, his aim was to bring the consulting expertise of the Big 4, and make it more accessible to Small and Medium Enterprises - in areas of performance improvement, transformation and culture change.

For ambitious executives that want greater levels of growth in their business, who who want to improve areas of their business such as greater customer service, reduced costs or improved revenue and profitability, Backline Consulting has been set up for exactly this.

Whilst we offer consulting services to implement the necessary improvements to your organisation in order to improve top- and bottom-line results, one of our objectives when we work with clients is to ensure our clients develop an internal capability so that they can continually grow beyond our involvement.

I'M SIMON HOUGHTON

A management consultant. A sport psychologist. An executive coach. A specialist in culture change.

I have applied the above to transform organisations across Australia, South East Asia, Russia, the Middle East, Europe, UK, and North America.

I've worked with the likes of Shell, Reuters, Vodafone and other multinational corporations, looking to manage change more effectively, and to improve productivity, and profit. But I've also worked with much smaller organisations. An engineering consultancy start-up. A mid-size recruitment agency. An ambitious social enterprise organisation. I've adapted the skills, tools and techniques used with Blue-Chip clients to enable them to be applied equally well with SMEs.

All our services lean towards sport in some way, shape or form. This is what differentiates us. There are distinct parallels to be drawn how a business sets out, and communicates it's vision, and how an NFL Football team communicates its play strategy during a game, where there are 25 coaches and 46 players. Or what a business can learn from the culture at FC Barcelona, and the instilling of a winning mindset. And the study of the different leadership styles visible in the Premiership with the likes of Guardiola, Klopp, Mourinho and, of course, Sir Alex Ferguson. 

Whilst there is always a place for management speak such as Porter's 5-Forces, SWOT and PEST analysis, we prefer to 'get onto the field' and do our workshops, consulting and coaching in a more unconventional, but no less, effective manner.

HIGH PERFORMING TEAMS WORKSHOP

Our High Performing Teams Workshop is unlike any team building activity you will have ever encountered! 

Thoroughly enjoyable for all ages, all seniority and levels of fitness, our flagship workshop teaches your teams the behaviours required to achieve high performance. And the fun bit? We teach and facilitate this through the medium of Blind Football. Teams learn to trust one another, experience the importance of communication, collaborate at a much higher level, and realise the importance of both leadership and teamwork.  

The workshop is in two parts - during the morning the teams are learning the blind football skills and the critical behaviours required to be successful. During the afternoon, the teams reflect on the behaviours required to be successful at Blind Football, and how they relate to the business environment. We discuss the required behaviours, and how they can be applied more effectively in the office.

A lot of the coaching that we do is around supporting an organisations' growth and how leadership manages change. 

If you are a leader who is initiating change, we can help. We'll stay on the sidelines, watching you perform, providing key messages for you to deliver 'on the field'. We'll provide pep talks when things aren't going according to plan, and we'll whiteboard the tactics with you, to get you and the team into the scoring zone, and achieving change adoption.

With over 20 years experience of organisational and culture change, we've sen a lot of what works, and what doesn't. Disruption and change is the single biggest threat to survival and success, but far too many projects and programmes fail to ‘go all the way’. THE LOCKER ROOM PROGRAMME

Our Business Growth Programme (what we call the Locker Room Programme) has been developed for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) who are in the growth stage. They are (or have been) experiencing rapid growth and have not had time to organise properly. The programme addresses critical aspects of your business that may have been left to one side during the chase for sales and growth. They are:

  • Culture: defining a winning mindset culture necessary to take the business to the next stage of its evolution
  • Systems: identifying the critical process and procedures that need to be systematised in order that scale can be achieved. What KPIs ar needed to measure the systematisation to ensure it is effective? 
  • Performance Improvement: Where are the potential improvements still to be made? Linking with culture, how do we deliver the results of a winning and 'continuous improvement' mindset so that employees at all levels are continually striving for excellence in everything they do?
  • Managing Change: change is hard, but necessary. What are the tools needed to ensure the change being experienced by the organisation is as minimally disruptive to staff as possible?  


The programme is 12-weeks in duration and is delivered through online learning, and coaching, and includes unlimited email support to ensure any issues that come up, at any point in tme, ar addressed effectively.
